Lingering by Chris Coppel

The woods looked dark and ominous. Between the trees, where the darkness was blacker than black, dozens of slanted yellow eyes flicked open and stared back towards the house. They weren't the eyes of anything human. When Paul and Christy purchase Croft House, they are both looking forward to a new start. Christy's abusive father is dying and she is ready to put the past well and truly behind her. But the house has other ideas. They soon realise there is something in the house, something that's trying to communicate with them. In their fear, they ask a local psychic to remove this entity. And in so doing, release something far, far worse.

Press Release

Asserting his dominance as a seasoned horror author, Chris Coppel is soon to release his highly anticipated ninth horror novel, Lingering, a dark psychological thriller set in a mysterious forest, exploring classical themes of sub-human entities and isolated environments.

In horror writer, Chris Coppel’s Lingering, Paul and Christy are in the throes of buying their new home, Croft House. But the death of Christy’s father leads to Paul moving in initially on his own. Whilst working at the house, strange things start to happen almost immediately. With the help of a local psychic, the original entity is removed only to open the doors to more evil powers and the horrors of Croft House’s past coming to the fore.

Transfixing from the outset, the author’s wordsmithing skills immerse readers alongside the novel’s protagonists in a house of horrors brimming with scares and paranormal mayhem that is on par with literature’s horror greats.

Character-driven and mind-bending, with nine novels under his belt, Coppel’s writing only gets better and better with each new title. Like his father’s writing, (Alec Coppel, is the genius behind Vertigo) his latest work has ‘movie in the making’ written all over it.

Prolific and at the top of his game, Lingering seals the author’s reputation as the undisputed literary leader of spine-chilling and contemporary horror.

Horror At Croft House The woods looked dark and ominous, Between the trees, where the darkness was blacker than black, dozens of slanted yellow eyes flicked open and stared back towards the house. They weren’t the eyes of anything human.

5 STARS - Excellent Paranormal Thriller ~ Chris Coppel weaves a splendid tale of mystery in his book Lingering, a paranormal thriller that will have readers eager to get to the end.

Protagonists Paul and Christy Chappel purchase an old house and are excited because it came as a great deal. After viewing the house, Paul and his wife go to a pub to discuss and make a final decision on what their offer would be. While there, a man sitting nearby over hears their conversation and makes a remark about the house that leaves the couple puzzled. “It’s not the house that’s the problem. It’s what’s in it. Once you’ve moved in, it’ll be too late.” The plot starts to make a slow climax from this juncture. Paul is excited about the prospect of not having neighbors and overlooks many of the inconsistencies and small discrepancies of layout of the house. There just happens to be a seven foot thick mystery wall in the house but is it JUST a wall???

The plot twists reveal the dark side of Christy’s past and tells of physical abuse, emotional trauma and sexual abuse. Christy’s father was not a good man but in his senior years he experienced a stroke which resulted in him needing additional care. Christy’s ruminations illuminate her emotional development, especially as she deals with an aging father who still makes an attempt at being inappropriate. The author builds on Christy’s character and she is seen as kind-hearted and compassionate, even though her father sexually abused her, she came to his aid in his time of need. While she was caring for her father her husband Paul was in the middle of several paranormal experiences with a benevolent presence in the house. When Christy finally arrives at the house the plot accelerates rapidly and the suspense is palpable. There is more than one presence in the house and the second is malevolent. The Croft House is indeed haunted and the couple do all they can to solve the mystery and even banish the spirits that dwell within the house. The book concludes quite peacefully and readers will be satisfied with the author's work.

5 STARS - spine-tingling thriller ~ I'm such a huge fan of thrillers and paranormal horror reads, so after I read the synopsis for Lingering, I immediately knew I had to read it. Sometimes with books in this genre, the premise is a bit predictable, but I was so happy to find that I was met with turn after turn in this thriller. The scene is set well by the author and the story is presented with a grim light that will keep a reader on the edge of their seat. This story really comes to life after only a few chapters and is one that I would gladly recommend to any reader who has a craving for a good thriller that they will remember anytime they hear a small "creak" near them. Definitely not for the faint of heart though as there are vivid descriptions and some spine-tingling scares.

5 STARS - Edge of your seat story ~ I don’t know the exact reasons, but as soon as I saw this masterpiece it caught all my attention. I found everything in this book magnificently intriguing; the cover, the title and the brief summary of the content told me it would be a scary but brilliant experience. I wasn’t wrong at all! I devoured this book in only two sittings since it was impossible to stop reading it.
There are suggestions from the very beginning that something isn’t quite normal about Paul and Christy’s house but when I could discover the real truth I felt myself getting sick. This story really hit me in the gut.
I'm super anxious on how to rate this book because without any doubt I would give it more than 5 stars.

5 STARS - Gripping ~ Lingering by author Chris Coppel is a gripping thriller that will surely keep readers on their toes the entire time.
Like in other books of his authorship, Coppel excellently manages suspense in his narrative and the information is accurately revealed when last expect it. I enjoyed this book as it completely caught me, to the point of abstracting from reality and living the suspenseful experiences with the protagonists. Also, the paranormal components gives shocking and petrifying experiences to the reader while going through the chapters.

All in all, this is a very good book in its kind and I recommend it to everyone who likes the horror and thriller genre.

When Paul and Christy decide to leave behind their past and start a new life, they decide to buy a house. But not any house, one that's far away from everything and hard to access, but majestic and beautiful. What they didn't know, but soon discovered, is that the house has an entity, a supernatural force who is trying to connect with them.

This is one of those books to read at nightfall. The author makes incredible use of suspense, leading the reader to be interested in the story until the end. The rich plot and the well-rounded characters create the perfect mysterious vibe that kept me hooked. Definitely recommended!.

Christy and Paul are two very strong main characters full of hope for a better future. But the new house they move into has other plans for them.
